Rickie Fowler, currently one of the nation’s most accomplished amateurs, has announced he will forego his final two years of college and turn professional in September.

Playing in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla., the Murrieta native told NewsOK.com he is “100 percent” sure of his decision.

“If it wasn’t for the Walker Cup, I’d probably be turning earlier,” Fowler told NewsOK.com. The Walker Cup, an amateur team event pitting squads from the United States and Great Britain/Ireland, will be held September 12-13.

Fowler, who was slated to begin his junior year at Oklahoma State University this fall, is in the process of finalizing his professional schedule for 2009. So far, he’s confirmed he’ll be in one event — the Nationwide Tour’s Soboba Classic, which will be held October 1-4 at the Country Club at Soboba Springs in San Jacinto and feature a $1 million purse.

In just two seasons at Oklahoma State, the 20-year-old Fowler amassed an impressive résumé. In 2008, he became the first freshman ever to win the Ben Hogan Award, given to the most outstanding player in the nation, while also winning the Phil Mickelson Award for most outstanding freshman. Fowler garnered All-America honors as both a freshman and sophomore.

He’s also won an array of prominent amateur events, including a pair of Sunnehanna Amateur crowns and the Western Junior. Fowler qualified for the 2008 U.S. Open at San Diego’s Torrey Pines Golf Course and tied for 60th. At one time, he was the top-ranked amateur in the world.

Fowler qualified for the match-play portion of the Public Links by tying for third in 36 holes of stroke play. Check back to Southland Golf this week for his progress and also for information on his professional schedule as it develops.
