Rickie Fowler may have saved his best amateur performance for last. The 20-year-old Murrieta native, who said he would bid adieu to the non-professional ranks as a member of the U.S. team at the 2009 Walker Cup, dominated the Great Britain & Ireland competition to help the Americans score a lopsided 16.5-9.5 win in the event over the weekend at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa. Fowler won all four of his matches, teaming with Bud Cauley to win two foursomes matches and winning both of his singles matches, one of which was an emphatic 7-and-6 triumph over heralded competitor Sam Hutsby on Saturday. His efforts helped the Americans win their third straight cup — Fowler also competed in the 2007 Walker Cup, compiling a 3-0-1 record, giving him a 7-0-1 combined record in the competition. “The whole reason I waited around [to turn pro] was for this weekend,” said Fowler. “To go 4-0 and get the Cup back, it can’t get any better. It’s going to be tough to top this weekend.” A former standout on the men’s golf team at Oklahoma State University, Fowler announced over the summer he would forego his final two years of collegiate eligibility and turn professional in the fall. He had a stellar amateur career, garnering both freshman and player of the year honors in his debut season with the Cowboys, as well as winning a plethora of high-profile events, including back-to-back titles at the Sunnehanna Amateur. But his two efforts at the Walker Cup may wind up being the most impressive in hindsight, considering the event is one of the most historic in golf and widely regarded one of the most prestigious — whether amateur or professional. “I don’t know if anybody has played for the U.S. the way Rickie has played in the last two Walker Cups,” said U.S. Captain Buddy Marucci, who also led the Americans when Fowler first played for them in 2007. Another Southern Californian who competed for the U.S. in the 2009 Walker Cup was Laguna Niguel native Cameron Tringale. The four-year star at Georgia Tech University went 1-1-1, with his most compelling moment coming in singles on Sunday — he defeated Luke Goddard 8-and-6 to gain the 13th point for the Americans to clinch the Cup.
