Two previous champions of Southern California Golf Association events added to their hardware last week at Sandpiper Golf Course in Santa Barbara, as Nick Delio won the SCGA Match Play Championship and Brad Larsen won the SCGA Senior Match Play Championship. Larsen, an Oceanside resident, defeated San Pedro’s Greg Hetzer by a 4-and-3 margin in Wednesday’s final. With the 2010 SCGA Senior Amateur title already under his belt, Larsen is the second consecutive player to win the SCGA Senior Amateur and Match Play championships in the same year. Howie Knodt accomplished that same feat in 2009. Delio, a Valencia resident and rising senior on the men’s golf team at Cal State-Northridge, defended his title at the third annual Match Play Championship by scoring a 3-and-2 victory against Santa Barbara's Jack Perry in Wednesday’s final. “I’m really happy to defend and confident in my game right now,” said Delio, who also won 2008 California State Amateur and earlier this year was medalist in the NCAA Southwest Regional at Carlton Oaks Country Club in Santee. This is the latest runner-up finish in 2010 for Perry, who lost to Patrick Cantlay in a playoff at the CIF State High School Championship and was second to Scott Travers in the SCGA Amateur at La Cumbre Country Club.
