Hillcrest Country Club's Ron Skayhan wins 2009 SCPGA Sectional Championship after sudden-death

Skayhan holds Fiedler and Casagranda at bay during playoff, Starkjohann falters in final round.

Hillcrest Country Club PGA professional and Huntington Beach resident Ron Skayhan won the SCPGA Section Championship in a sudden-death playoff Wednesday at Barona Creek Golf Club in Lakeside.

After 54 holes, Skayhan was tied with Greg Casagranda, a pro at the Hodges Learning Center and Jon Fiedler of Las Posas Country Club. Casagranda lost after making bogey on the first playoff hole and Skayhan parred the second playoff hole to edge Fiedler, who made bogey.

The win not only banked Skayhan $10,000 but also earned him a spot in the Nationwide Tour Soboba Classic, which will be held in October at the Country Club at Soboba Springs in San Jacinto.

A notable name who was not in the playoff was Chris Starkjohann, also a pro at Hodges. The 53-year-old was the 36-hole leader after carding back-to-back rounds of 6-under-par 66, but in the final round, he faltered to a 2-over-par 74 after struggling with his putter and bogeying the par-5 17th after knocking a lay-up shot into a creek.

The top-10 finishers also qualified for the 2010 PGA Professional National Championship.
