GolfChannel.com has reported that Korean electronics company Samsung has decided not to come back as title sponsor of the 20-player LPGA Tour event most recently held at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego. Golf Channel discovered Samsung’s intention from a memo circulated by LPGA Tour Interim Commissiner Marty Evans, who said “all indications during tournament week were to the contrary.” The event, which annually features an elite field of 20 of the top women golfers in the world, was held for the first time this year at Torrey Pines. It had previously been held at Bighorn Golf Club in the Coachella Valley. Samsung had been title sponsor since 1995. Jon Wagner, senior vice president of IMG Golf — which operates the tournament — told Sports Business Journal that the group will “actively” seek a new title sponsor. Samsung’s decision further casts a cloud of uncertainty for the LPGA Tour in 2010. The circuit has been hit hard by the economic downturn, as several other title sponsors, including Anheuser-Busch, have decided not to renew their tournament contracts for next year, ALSO SEE: Choi wins Samsung World Championship LPGA Tour to tee it up in San Diego area for first time since 1993 LPGA Tour’s Samsung World Championship headed to Torrey Pines |
