Hossler, Cathrea among winners at third annual San Diego Junior Amateur Championship

Top finishers qualify for 2010 Junior World Golf Championships.

BY ELI MILLERPublished: January, 2010

With an atmosphere that resembled a “Mini-Junior World” according to organizer Chris Smeal, the San Diego Junior Amateur Championship featured talented Southern California junior golfers in 10 different divisions competing at Steele Canyon Golf Club and Sycuan Resort in San Diego County.

The week-long event was one of the most important on the Future Champions Golf schedule — top finishers qualified for the prestigious 2010 Junior World Golf Championships, which will be held July 12-16.

Rancho Santa Margarita’s Beau Hossler captured the Boys Championship (ages 15-18) grouping, shooting rounds of 69-71 at Steele Canyon to defeat high school teammate Andrew Levitt by a single stroke. The deep field of 76 players included San Diegan Byron Meth (75-69, tied for fourth) and San Juan Capistrano’s Rito Armenta (73-73, tied for eighth). (Click here for complete results.)

In the Girls Championship (ages 15-18), one of the nation’s most accomplished juniors played up a division and still managed to run away with the title. Thirteen-year-old Casie Cathrea, a freshman at Livermore High School in Northern California, shot 72-76 to win by nine strokes over Kaitlin Park. Cathrea had a banner 2009 campaign, qualifying for the LPGA Tour’s CVS/pharmacy LPGA Challenge in September and making a hole-in-one during the first round, then winning the California Women’s Amateur Championship in November. Girls 13-14: Lydia Choi of Beverly Hills topped the field by seven strokes at Sycuan, shooting 76-72. San Diego’s Jennifer Peng (78-77) by seven strokes. (Click here for complete results.)

Boys 11-12: Japan native Issei Tanabe, playing out of Huntington Beach, posted scores of 74-72 to outlast Roy Cootes (73-75) by two strokes. (Click here for complete results.)

Girls 11-12: Angel Yin of Arcadia repeated as the champion of this division, recording impressive rounds of 70-71 (3-under par) to top Fountain Valley’s Lilia Vu (75-74), a past Junior World winner, by eight strokes. (Click here for complete results.)
