Twice as nice

The Girls Junior Americas Cup joins the Junior World Golf Championships as marquee events on the calendar this month in San Diego County.

BY ELI MILLERPublished: July, 2010

Once again, the South Course at Torrey Pines will be a host site for Junior World.
Every year, dozens of junior golfers from around the world head to San Diego County for a chance to play in an event won by the likes of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els and Lorena Ochoa.

The Junior World Golf Championships typically grab most of the Southern California spotlight for young players in July, but this year the event isn’t alone on the calendar.

The Girls Junior Americas Cup will be held July 27-30 at Morgan Run Resort in Rancho Santa Fe. Comprising 18 teams of four players from regions around the Western United States and other North American countries, it’s the oldest team event for girls in the United States, having been established in 1978.

“We’re very excited to host it,” said Megan Mahoney, executive director of the San Diego Junior Golf Association, which also hosts Junior World. “It’s a prestigious event that’s had a lot of great past competitors. Plus, it gives the girls a taste of what college golf is like.”

Marquee names that have competed in recent years include Ochoa, Pat Hurst and Brandie Burton.

Squads from Southern California have won the 54-hole stroke-play competition seven of the past nine years. Individual winners over that time include Whittier’s Lee Lopez, now a member of the UCLA women’s golf team, and Emily Tubert, a Burbank resident who will enroll and play golf at Arkansas this fall.

This marks the first time the Girls Junior Americas Cup has been held in Southern California since 2001, when it was contested at Mesa Verde Country Club in Costa Mesa.

The Junior World Golf Championships has been a San Diego tradition since 1968, annually bringing together top youngsters from a variety of age groups for a multi-day competition on some of the top courses in the county.

The course rotation this year is the same as it was in 2009, with Torrey Pines Golf Course, Sycuan Resort, Riverwalk Golf Club and The Country Club of Rancho Bernardo among the venues. While boys and girls in the 15-17 age divisions play 72 holes, all younger groups compete for 54 holes.

One major difference this year is those younger groups will not feature a cut after 36 holes.

“Over the last few years, I don’t think I’ve heard anybody say they really like a cut,” Mahoney said. “We have juniors from about 50 countries represented, and many of these people come with their families from far distances. We just felt it was time to eliminate it.”

Among the talented local juniors scheduled to compete are Rico Hoey, Norman Xiong and Sahith Theegala.

Opening ceremonies for Junior World begin July 10 at Torrey Pines, with the competition held from July 13-16.

Both tournaments are open to the public, with the only exception being the 7-and-under age groupings for Junior Worlds. Attendance is free.
