Scott Travers of Trabuco Canyon joined elite company by winning the SCGA Amateur over the weekend, becoming only the fourth player ever to capture both that event and the California State Amateur in the same year.

The 22-year-old, who garnered the California State title last month, established a new SCGA Amateur scoring record with a 16-under-par 268 total at La Cumbre Country Club in Santa Barbara. Jack Perry, a Santa Barbara resident, finished second at 14-under 270.

"It's a pretty cool feeling to win both championships," said Travers, who posted a 2-under-par 69 in the final round. "My goal this summer was to win just one event. To win two major ones — it's more than I hoped for."

The SCGA Amateur and California State Amateur have been contested in the same year 99 times, and until 2010, only Dr. Paul Hunter (1921), George Von Elm (1925) and Johnny Dawson (1942) won both events concurrently.

Travers and Perry were tied for the lead at 9-under par after 36 holes of Friday, and Travers took the lead by one at 14-under through 54 holes Saturday.

An incoming senior on the men’s golf team at Santa Clara University and the reigning West Coast Conference Player of the Year, Travers had a rocky front nine in Sunday’s final round and relinquished the lead to Perry after a double bogey on the par-5 sixth hole.

However, Perry, who recently graduated from Santa Barbara High School and will attend Northwestern University this fall, went 3-over par from holes 7-10 (despite an eagle on the par-5 ninth) to seal his runner-up fate.

Travers recorded a 2-under total over his final 12 holes to clinch the victory.

The previous SCGA Amateur scoring record was 14-under-par 270, set by Tiger Woods in 1994 at Hacienda Golf Club in La Habra Heights.

Two-time SCGA Amateur winner Kevin Marsh, whose home course is La Cumbre, was alone in third at 13-under. Patrick Cantlay (Los Alamitos), who captured the CIF Boys State High School Championship last month, tied for the low round Sunday with a 4-under 67 en route to a 12-under-par total and a fourth-place finish.

Tim Hogarth (Northridge) tied for fifth at 9-under 275.
