Soboba Classic notebook: Tidland fires Sunday’s low round

Chris Tidland took advantage of benign conditions early during Sunday's final round to shoot 67.
Here are news and notes on local players from the Nationwide Tour’s inaugural Soboba Classic, which was held over the weekend at the Country Club at Soboba Springs in San Jacinto.

• After 36 holes, Torrance native and former Placentia resident Chris Tidland stood in a tie for 28th place at 2-under par. But he struggled to a 4-under-par 75 in the third round, falling down the leaderboard so far that he was in the second pairing off for the final round.

A lackluster 75 shouldn’t necessarily be considered a blessing in disguise for Tidland, but his early start time Sunday enabled him to miss most of the high winds that baffled players in later groups and shoot a 4-under 67, the low round of the day. He finished tied for 31st.

With a win and a pair of second-place finishes on the Nationwide Tour this season, the 37-year-old is headed back to the PGA Tour in 2010. He was a full-time in 2007, making just eight of 21 cuts.

When asked what he’s looking forward to most about returning to the PGA Tour, he said, “Competing against the best players in the world. That’s what we play for. That’s what we practice hard for and spend all those hours alone away from our families — to try to achieve good things against the best in the world.”

• Former UCLA standout Kevin Chappell (pictured) didn’t let disaster prevent him from finishing inside the top 25 and earning a spot in the field at next week’s Chattanooga Classic Presented by Black Creek.

The 2008 national collegiate player of the year carded six birdies in the final round, but also had two bogeys and a catastrophic quadruple-bogey 7 on the par-3 15th. Still, Chappell finished at even-par 71 for the day and 6-under par for the tournament and in a tie for 14th place.

“It was a mental lapse,” Chappell said of his high score on No. 15.

Chappell was distraught after the round, but there is some consolation — since he doesn’t have exempt status on the Nationwide Tour, his top-25 finish enables him to compete at next week’s tournament. It’s his fourth such finish in his last five tournaments, including a tie for fifth at the Northeast Pennsylvania Classic in August.

“That wasn’t the goal for the week. I came in here hoping to win and trying to figure out what I have to do to win,” Chappell said. “I figure if I can do that, I’m going to finish inside the top 25 no matter what.”

Chappell now stands 76th on the money list with two more chances to crack the top 60 and qualify for the season-ending Nationwide Tour Championship.

• Ventura’s Steve Pate struggled mightily with a 5-over-par 76 during the final round, but he was still a focal point of the Golf Channel’s television coverage. Why? He wore a heart-rate monitor for the day, enabling viewers to see how much his beats per minute oscillated before, during and after shots.

“I didn’t know what [my heart rate] would be, and now I know,” said Pate with his usual candor. “But I played like crap all day. I didn’t make any putts, and nothing went right.”

Pate, who's played in a combined 12 PGA and Nationwide Tour events but made just three cuts, said the Soboba Classic would be his final competitive event of 2009, as back problems have limited his schedule. The former UCLA golfer plans on playing a fuller schedule on the Nationwide Tour in 2010.

• Other notable Southern California finishers: Bob May didn’t post an over-par round any of the four days and tied for 11th at 7-under par … Forty-nine-year-old journeyman Jeff Hart, playing on a sponsor’s exemption, also finished 11th. Hart, a Pomona native and Solana Beach resident, will try to qualify for the Champions Tour in 2010 … UCLA graduate Jay Delsing shot 69-69 on the weekend and finished alone in 17th place at 5-under … Jeff Gove, a Pepperdine alumnus and former San Diego resident, compiled a 4-under-par total and tied for 18th.
