Rickie Fowler’s dense throng of rabid, orange-clad fans were treated to a course-record 65 in Friday’s second round of the Nationwide Tour’s inaugural Soboba Classic in San Jacinto. But in Saturday’s third round, that record was outdone by a player who’s no stranger to upstaging the 20-year-old Murrieta native. Derek Lamely, who defeated Fowler in a playoff at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational in August, established a new mark at the Country Club at Soboba Springs with a 9-under-par 62 and moved into a share of the lead at 14-under par with Brian Stuard. Stuard himself eclipsed 65, going out in 7-under-par 29 en route to a 64. Lamely and Stuard will begin the final round one shot ahead of second-round leader Jerod Turner, who kept pace with a 5-under-par 66. Fowler’s 1-under 70 on Saturday was his sloppiest effort of the week. He had four bogeys — compared to one apiece during his first and second rounds — hit just five of 14 fairways and took 31 putts. His final four holes told the tale: back-to-back bogeys on 15 and 16, a booming drive that lead to an easy birdie on the short par-4 17th, and a disappointing par on the short par-5 18th after he failed to get up-and-down from a greenside bunker. He will begin the final round in a tie for 10th at 8-under par, six shots off the lead. One of the most surprising performances of the third round belonged to Jeff Hart, a 49-year-old Pomona native and Solana Beach resident who has no exempt status on the Nationwide Tour. Hart rode a hot putter to a 6-under 65, vaulting to a tie for fourth at 11-under par. There are two other Southern California natives near the top of the leaderboard: • Idyllwild’s Brendan Steele posted a 68 Saturday, his third-straight sub-70 round. The 26-year-old is tied for 10th with Fowler. • Also in 10th in Ventura’s Steve Pate, who matched Steele’s 68. Visit PGATour.com for complete scores.
