The Country Club at Soboba Springs will host Nationwide Tour stars in October, but until then area amateurs have the opportunity to feel like a pro.

October is just around the corner, meaning final preparations are in the works for the Nationwide Tour’s Soboba Classic, set for San Jacinto’s Country Club at Soboba Springs from October 1-4.

Featuring a $1 million purse and what is likely to be one of the deepest fields on the Nationwide Tour schedule, the Soboba Classic will go a long way toward determining which 25 players advance to the PGA Tour in 2010 based on season earnings.

Golfers who want to get a feel for what it’s like to play on a professional-caliber layout should visit Soboba Springs before it temporarily closes for public play on Sept. 22.

“Now is the best time for golfers to come out and see what it takes to get a golf course converted into Tour shape,” said Soboba Classic Tournament Director Doug Hoffort.

For one, a new driving range is being constructed at the western end of the property. The current range will be rebuilt to accommodate a new tee structure for the first hole.

The most detailed preparation is on the course. The par-72, 7,075-yard layout was recently converted to bermuda fairways to provide a lush sheen and ensure that the surfaces will be fast and firm by tournament time. Hoffort said the conversion process wasn’t easy, but once some of the best players in the world — and until then, everyday golfers — have an opportunity to hit shots from the terrain, the work will prove to be a labor of love.

“It’s in the best condition it’s been” since a 2007 renovation, Hoffort said.

While the field for the Soboba Classic has yet to be finalized, heralded Murrieta amateur Rickie Fowler announced he will make the event one of his first appearances when he turns professional this fall.
