Roundup: Southern Californians fizzle on weekend at Sony Open

Merrick paces local pack with tie for 25th.

BY ELI MILLERPublished: January, 2010

After 36 holes of the PGA Tour’s Sony Open, a few prominent golfers with Southern California ties seemed poised to challenge for the title over the weekend at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Such hopes never materialized, though.

Long Beach natives John Merrick and Paul Goydos and San Diegan Pat Perez, who all positioned themselves near the top of the leaderboard in the first half of the tournament, each went over par for the final 36 holes of the first full-field event on the 2010 schedule. Merrick mustered the best finish of the bunch, a tie for 25th, wrapping up with rounds of 72-70 (2-over par) after opening marks of 65-68 put him two strokes behind eventual champion Ryan Palmer heading into the weekend.

Palmer birdied the 18th hole to post a 15-under-par total and defeat Robert Allenby by a stroke. Steve Stricker, the third-ranked player in the world, finished two strokes back in third place.

Goydos, the 2007 Sony Open champion, went into the third round with momentum after compiling a scintillating 7-under-par 63 in the second round. But the 45-year-old could not continue the momentum, registering scores of 69-72 to finish in a tie for 39th at 4-under, one behind Merrick.

Perez, the former San Diego resident, failed to match the 4-under-par 66 he posted in the first round, concluding the event with rounds of 70-69-73 to wind up in a tie for 46th at 2-under par. Perez will defend his first career PGA Tour title at this week’s Bob Hope Classic in the Coachella Valley.

A less-prominent competitor with a Southern California connection who appeared on the leaderboard during the second round was USC alumnus Roger Tambellini. The 2009 Nationwide Tour graduate opened with a pair of under-par scores but closed with a pair of over-par tallies, finishing in a tie for 52nd at 1-under par.

Here are results from other golfers with Southern California ties at the Sony Open:

• Torrance native Chris Tidland, a fellow ’09 Nationwide Tour graduate, finished tied for 46th at 2-under par.

• Ventura native Corey Pavin, who will captain the U.S. Ryder Cup team in Wales later this year, made the cut after shooting a 3-under 67 Friday but went 71-70 on the weekend to finish tied for 52nd at 1-under. Also in that position was former Diamond Bar resident Kevin Na, who had difficulty ascending into contention after registering a 3-over 73 in the first round.

• Encinitas native and former San Diego State men’s golf team member Aaron Goldberg, who gained entry into the field by virtue of winning the Monday qualifier with a 63 on the Palmer Course at Turtle Bay Resort, made the cut on the number but was eliminated from the field at the end of the third round because he finished outside the top 70.

• In his first event as a full-time PGA Tour member, Murrieta native Rickie Fowler struggled with opening rounds of 75-72 to miss the cut by a wide margin. He has been awarded a sponsor’s exemption for the Bob Hope Classic and, barring withdrawal there, will have an opportunity to get four rounds under his belt regardless of whether or not he makes the cut.

• Laguna Niguel native Cameron Tringale, also playing in his first PGA Tour event as a full-time member, shot 71-71 for the first 36 holes to miss the cut by the number.
