The Southern California PGA’s first Neighborhood Golf event was held July 15 at Alhambra Golf Course. More than 300 people attended the free event, designed to introduce or re-introduce golf to people of all ages. Attendees received lessons from PGA professionals, participated in putting contests, and a raffle was held for chances to win clubs, balls and clothing. In addition, Nike and Wilson representatives provided club-fitting services, so golfers could try out the current crop of equipment. Neighborhood Golf arose out of a need to make the game more accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds close to home. “Many people don’t have the time or the means to get to a golf course and play, so the SCPGA set out to create a program where golf is brought into these neighborhoods in Southern California,” said Tom Addis III, CEO of the Southern California PGA. “Future events will be held at golf courses, schools and public parks in communities with diverse populations.” Through partnerships with schools, churches, Boys and Girls Clubs and other community organizations, the public will be invited to attend these events, where coupons for discounts on rounds of golf and lessons at area courses also will be available. “The SCPGA would like to thank the staff of Alhambra Golf Course, including director of golf Jerry Wisz, and the city of Alhambra for making this event possible,” Addis said. The Orange County Senior Golf Association held its second Junior-Senior Golf Tournament on July 7 at Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach. The event, which benefits the SCPGA Foundation, featured nearly 100 golfers, including 24 SCPGA Junior Tour members. Each junior was paired with three Orange County seniors in a better-ball format. The event began with a clinic by PGA professional Jamie Mulligan of Virginia Country Club in Long Beach and one of his students, Travis Johnson, a former SCPGA Junior Tour member who now plays professionally. Following play, participants enjoyed dinner and awards, along with a silent and live auction, featuring trips to Turtle Bay Resort, Mexico, Canada, and a ticket package to the Ryder Cup in September. OCSGA member and benefactor of the event, Frank Scott, was honored with the inception of the Frank Scott Award, given to the low-medalist boy and girl. Winners were Brian Song, 14, of Beverly Hills, who shot an even-par 72 and Erin Choi, 12, of Torrance, who shot a 79. Estimated net proceeds from the event exceeded $40,000. The funds will be used to establish the Foundation Fund to provide financial assistance for junior golfers in need, as well as assist in other growth-of-the-game initiatives. “The SCPGA Foundation would like to thank the Orange County Senior Golf Association for their generosity and support of junior golfers,” said Foundation Director Nikki Gatch.
