Jerry Wisz of Alhambra won the Southern California PGA Senior Section Championship, defeating Chris Starkjohann in a sudden-death playoff Tuesday on the Legends Course at East Valley Golf Club in Beaumont.

Wisz, the PGA director of golf at Alhambra Golf Course shot an opening round 8-under-par 64, the lowest round of the tournament, and followed that with a 3-under-par 69 to finish at 11-under-par 133.

Starkjohann, a PGA professional at the Hodges Learning Center in San Diego County, reached 133 by carding rounds of 6-under-par 66 and 5-under-par 67.

Third-place finisher Butch Sheehan of Rancho Mirage was six strokes back at 5-under 139.

Gary Sowinski, the Director of Golf at Morgan Run Club & Resort finished in a three-way tie for fourth with Paul Wise (Redondo Beach) and Bruce Burroughs (Bakersfield). They each carded 3-under-par 141s.

Starkjohann competed in the event just days after missing the cut at this year’s PGA Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Minnesota.
