Steven Kearney, a former standout at La Costa Canyon High School and a rising sophomore on the Stanford men’s golf team, won the San Diego City Amateur Championship Sunday at Torrey Pines Golf Course. The 19-year-old Kearney shot a 1-under-par 71 in the final round on the South Course to finish the 54-hole stroke play event tied with 36-hole co-leaders Gary Robinson and John Malone, who each closed with 3-over 75s. On the first hole of the sudden-death playoff — the par-5 18th — Kearney and Malone advanced with pars but Robinson was eliminated after making bogey. On the next hole, the par-4 seventh, Kearney recovered to make par after a bad drive but Malone made bogey. “It’s a big deal to win a tournament in my backyard,” Kearney told the San Diego Union-Tribune following the victory. Although the Carlsbad resident didn’t see much action for the Cardinal as a freshman, playing in only three events, he has an impressive amateur resume, having won the CIF-San Diego section individual crown as a high school senior. Plus, he nearly won the San Diego City two years ago, losing in a playoff to Jamie Puterbaugh. Eben Dobson finished alone in fourth after posting an even-par score in each round — Friday’s first round was held at Balboa park Golf Course, and Saturday’s second round moved to the North Course at Torrey Pines. Kaitlin Drolson, who will begin her junior year on the Pepperdine women’s golf team this fall, won the women’s division with a 228 total, four shots clear of San Diego State women’s golfers Samantha Roberts and Stephanie Arcala. This marks the continuation of an eventful summer for Drolson, who qualified for the U.S. Women’s Open at Oakmont Country Club. In the senior division, John Hoffman, the president of Torrey Pines Municipal Golf Club, won the title by five shots after finishing with an 8-over-par 224 total. James Cylke and Steven Hakes tied for second at 229. |
