Who Wants to be A Millionaire?

The Ultimate Game gives players a shot at the big bucks.

BY BRIAN ROBINPublished: May, 2006

Former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Steve Bartkowski, Jim Thomas and sports television producer Terry Jastrow have transformed the Big Stakes Match Play into The Ultimate Game, which will be held June 6-8 at Wynn Golf Club in Las Vegas.

The premise is simple. Put up $50,000 for a crack at $2 million. No handicap, no partner to lean on, no margin for error.

“I love the idea that anybody can put up their $50,000 and come play,” said Jastrow, the winner of seven Emmy Awards and the producer of 68 major championships during his career. “This could be anybody on the satellite tours, young players who have not yet got their PGA Tour cards. Maybe some talented amateurs who love to play for that kind of money, who love to hunt and feel they can do well under the crunch.”

Just ask David Ping and Garth Mulroy, a pair of Southern California mini-tour regulars, who won the inaugural Big Stakes Match Play last May in Mesquite, Nev. Ping and Mulroy turned aside club pros Rick Hartmann and Mark Mielke, 2 up, to win $725,000 apiece, with the balance of the $3 million first-prize check going to a pair of former NFL linemen – Ross Verba and Barry Stokes — who backed them.

The financial-backing aspect of the event is likely to continue in the single-player format this year.

“We also think there might be corporate sponsors not unlike NASCAR,” Jastrow said. “They want the exposure. They want the spin. They want the identity and, you know, there are some products that want advertising and exposure on television that can’t really run commercials. So, as in this case, it’s the perfect scenario, like NASCAR. We think the corporations may sponsor players.”

The field is limited to 160 players, who will play four rounds of match play at the Paiute Resort in Las Vegas.

Win two matches and you’re guaranteed your $50,000 back. Win the next match and it’s another $50,000. Win the fourth and it’s another $50,000 and a berth in the 10-player, 36-hole finals at Wynn Golf Club.
