The Prestige at PGA West a romp for TCU

TCU’s Daniel Jennevret finishes first overall; USC, UCLA tie for fourth place.

BY CHRISTIAN TAYLOR HILLPublished: October, 2009

Texas Christian University took home The Prestige at PGA West championship for the second consecutive season, dominating a strong men’s collegiate field with a 14-under-par 850 for a 16-stroke victory. The par-72, 7,300-yard Stadium Course in La Quinta, proved to be a formidable foe in the 54-hole event, with only TCU finishing below par. Stanford (2-over 866), Washington (5-over 869), USC and UCLA (8-over 872) rounded out the top five.

In addition to the team victory, TCU’s Daniel Jennevret finished first overall with a 12-under-par 204, holding off UCLA freshman Pedro Figueiredo, who finished second at 6-under. Jennevret, a freshman in only his second collegiate event, tied a school record for fastest golfer to claim a tournament championship — teammate Johan de Beer also won last year’s The Prestige at PGA West in his second career tournament.

USC and UCLA tied for fourth at 8-over, with UCLA relinquishing its first-round lead to TCU after a blistering 8-under 280. USC was led by La Palma native Steve Lim, who finished a career-best tied for third with a 4-under 212.

Universtiy of San Diego placed sixth with a three-round total of 879, edging Pepperdine by one stroke. Ben Murray, who hails from La Quinta, led USD with his eighth-place finish, shooting an opening round 3-under-par 69 and a tournament total 1-under 215.

Pepperdine finished strong on the final day, posting the second-best round — a 4-under 284, moving the team from 10th place to seventh.  Andrew Putnam led the way for Pepperdine, shooting a 3-under 213.

Rounding out Southern California teams in the tournament was Long Beach State, which finished 12th with a three round total 939.

Other Southern California natives of note include Stanford’s Sihwan Kim, who helped the Cardinal finish second at The Prestige. The Buena Park native finished tied for eighth after a final round 75 gave him a 54-hole score of 215. UC Davis junior Austin Graham of San Clemente finished tied for 22nd.
