SAN DIEGO — After the longest elective layoff of his professional career, Tiger Woods is back. The 13-time major championship winner and inaugural FedEx Cup champion took part in a video conference Monday at Torrey Pines Golf Course in promotion of the 2008 Buick Invitational, and on Tuesday met with the press prior to playing this week’s Target World Challenge at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks. Woods hit on many topics, including his course design business, charitable endeavors, and the prospect of playing the 2008 U.S. Open at San Diego’s Torrey Pines. Despite a two-month break from competition, Woods has still been priming himself for the upcoming PGA Tour season. “You just can’t neglect any part of your game,” he said. “You have to work on every single facet.” The last two years have been significantly eventful both on and off the course for the world’s No. 1 player. Though he won three majors in that span, he lost his father in 2006, and earlier this year his wife Elin gave birth to a daughter, Sam Alexis. “I’m just amazed at how a child changes. It’s been one of the neatest experiences ever,” said Woods. The Cypress native did announce some equipment changes for his 2008. He has put new irons in his bag, though they are the same design as his previous set. Woods said he will also be implementing a new 5-wood at some point soon. A decorated 16-player field will tee it up at Sherwood Country Club for the Target World Challenge, which kicks off this week. For tickets or more information, visit targetworldchallenge.com. |
