Hogarth wins fourth SCGA Mid-Amateur Championship

Northridge resident working on revamped approach to putting.

Tim Hogarth has compiled one of the best amateur careers in Southern California history, but he says a balky putter has held him back on certain occasions.

Hogarth sought out Ron and Dave Stockton Jr. at the start of 2010 to revamp his putting approach, and so far, change has been good.

Hogarth added a record fourth Southern California Golf Association Mid-Amateur Championship to his resume Tuesday, closing with a 1-under-par 70 at Hillcrest Country Club in Los Angeles for a 9-under total and a three-stroke triumph over Ladera Ranch’s Jason Bittick.

Tyler Crawford and John Pate tied for third at 2-under par, the only other two players to finish in red numbers.

Hogarth, who successfully defended the Mid-Amateur crown he garnered in 2009 at Hacienda Golf Club in La Habra Heights, engineered an efficient 54 holes thanks to the improved putting and the familiar consistency tee to green. A pair of 4-under-par 67s during Monday’s 36-hole frame included only one bogey and was enough for a two-stroke lead overnight.

Despite struggling a bit on his final nine holes Tuesday with two bogeys and no birdies, Hogarth did enough to outlast Bittick.

“I had my game face on. I wanted to win badly,” said Hogarth. “There’s nothing worse than having an opportunity and not coming through.”

The 43-year-old Northridge resident has come through on many occasions at SCGA tournaments around the Southland. Hillcrest happens to be the site of one of his most prominent victories, the 2004 Southern California Amateur.

“I guess I’m like an honorary member,” Hogarth said.

Despite a plethora of achievements — chief among them the 1996 U.S. Amateur Public Links title — Hogarth has worked hard at improving his game since the start of 2009. He enlisted golf fitness expert Daniel Farley to improve his physique, and next was a more common ailment — putting.

“I had putted the same way for my entire golf life, and it wasn’t effective. I obviously had won some big tournaments, but I can be honest in saying I wasn’t a good putter,” explained Hogarth. “It never felt like I had the ability to come to the golf course every single time and putt well.”

After implementing the change with Dave Jr., Hogarth actually decided to revert back to his old technique at first. However, further consultation with Ron Stockton reinforced the idea that Hogarth was headed in the right direction.

“I came to the conclusion I needed to make a change. It’s a new way of thinking,” he said.

Hogarth prepared for the Mid-Amateur with a third-place finish last week in the Kelly Cup at Lakeside Golf Club. Now, he seeks his fourth consecutive title in the Pasadena City Championship May 13-16 at his home course of Brookside, followed by U.S. Open Local Qualifying at Oakmont Country Club in Glendale.

“This really is the time I get the most fired up to play,” he said.
