Hogarth wins third straight Pasadena City Golf Championship

Northridge resident also shoots course-record 65 at Annandale in U.S. Open Local Qualifying.

Continuing to build on a successful 2009 season, renowned Northridge amateur Tim Hogarth captured his third consecutive title at the Pasadena City Golf Championship.

The 72-hole event was held at both 18-hole layouts at Brookside Golf Course from Thursday, May 14 through Sunday, May 17.

Hogarth positioned himself with a pair of one-under-par rounds during the first two days, then distanced himself from the competition over the final 36 holes with rounds of 68 and 69 to close with a nine-under-par total of 277.

Jake Sarnoff, a golfer at Loyola Marymount University, shot 280 and finished second.

The 42-year-old Hogarth, whose home course is Brookside, is especially proud of the victory considering he didn’t have his “A” game.

“I get a little bit of satisfaction from being able to shoot a score without my best game and find a way,” he told the Pasadena Star-News. “That’s something that’s been lacking in my game in the past. As I’m getting older, I’m finding a way to play even if I’m not all the way on.”

A day after winning the Pasadena City, Hogarth shot a course-record 65 at nearby Annandale Golf Club to earn medalist honors in U.S. Open Local Qualifying by a hefty five-stroke margin.

He has engineered an exceptional 2009 season, having also won his third SCGA Mid-Amateur crown at Hacienda Golf Club in La Habra Heights in April.

A California State University-Northridge business alumnus who works in the health food industry, Hogarth is the SCGA’s most decorated golfer and one of the most accomplished players in the Southland. He is the only player to win the SCGA’s “triple crown”: the SCGA Amateur (2004), SCGA Mid-Amateur (1999, 2007, 2009) and the California State Amateur (1999). With partner John Pate, he also won the 2004 and 2005 SCGA Foursomes Championships, and in 2008 he added an SCGA Tournament of Club Champions win.

Add these to his six Los Angeles City Amateur Championships, plus six Kelly Cup Invitationals, and two consecutive Pasadena City Amateur Championships, and his reputation as a premiere amateur golfer precedes him.

“No matter how many wins I get, each one feels great,” he said. “They’re all sweet.”

Katie Denbo of the SCGA contributed to this report.
