For the second time in three years, the Torrance High School girls golf team won the California CIF/NCGA State High School Girls Championship. In what was one of the more dramatic finishes in the recent history of the event, the Tartars defeated Pebble Beach’s Robert Louis Stevenson School by a single stroke at Poppy Hills Golf Course on November 15. “It was pretty exciting for the kids,” said coach John Wurzer. “You hope for things like this.” Stevenson’s girls teed off early in the day, posting a 401 total that was well ahead of the other squads that were finishing at the time. Although Torrance seemed to stay under the radar, the team remained in contention as the day went on thanks largely to a 72 from Jane Rah. As Wurzer kept track of the scores, he realized if sophomore Jenny Shin saved bogey on the par-5 18th hole, the Tartars would post 400 and beat Stevenson by one. When Shin nailed her two-foot putt for a six, the celebration began. “She was the last one of the day to putt,” Wurzer said of Shin. “It was quite the finish.” Lee Lopez, a senior at Whittier’s La Serna High School, shot a two-under 70 to defeat Rah by two strokes for the individual state title.
