Newport Beach Country Club's seventeenth hole adds to drama at Toshiba Classic

Plus, all you need to know for the Champions Tour's first stop in Southern California.

Water, sand and a treacherous green demand the full attention of Toshiba Classic competitors.
The annual site of the Champions Tour’s Toshiba Classic, Newport Beach Country Club is a traditional layout where most of the trouble can be found on and around green structures that don’t seem too treacherous until coming face-to-face with them.

One hole where the trouble is clearly laid out is the par-3 17th, which has provided plenty of drama at the tournament for 13 years. A solid tee shot is required to clear the lake and the rail-tie adorned front bunker, but that’s just the beginning — a pronounced two-tiered green is one of the toughest on the course.

In 1997, Bob Murphy drained an 80-footer for birdie on the 17th to win a playoff against Jay Sigel. A year later, eventual winner Hale Irwin gets a lucky break en route to a final-round 62 when a bunker rake prevented his errant tee ball from rolling back into the lake.

There has been lots more drama since then, and the hole could again be pivotal when the world’s best seniors tee it up from

Last year: Bernhard Langer prevailed in a seven-hole playoff against Jay Haas.

This year: Another star-studded field should be on hand. Hal Sutton will make his debut, and Tom Watson will play for the first time since 2003.

Notable: Patrons can enjoy the Chalone Monterey wine bar above the first tee. Also, sponsors Jaguar/Land Rover, Cleveland Golf and FirmGreen have teamed to present contests and prizes throughout the week.
