South African Tyrone Van Aswegen won last weekend's Long Beach Open by seven strokes, finishing with a 27-under-par 261 for the 72-hole event. The Open was held July 30 through August 2 at Skylinks and El Dorado Park golf courses.
Van Aswegen, who lives in San Diego during the summer months, opened the tournament by carding an 11-under-par 61 at Skylinks, setting the course record. He followed that with rounds of 7-under-par 65, 4-under-par 68 and 5-under-par 67.
Van Aswegen took home $29,000 for the victory.
Mike Ruiz of Las Vegas, Nev. took the runner-up spot after shooting a 268. Doug Garwood (Valencia) finished at third with a 270 while Garrett Sapp (Cerritos) finished fourth at 271. Five players tied for fifth at 272.
The $160,000 Long Beach Open was the final event in this year's Long Beach Golf Festival. The festival began in 1989 and quickly gained popularity with both professionals and amateurs.
