As expected, the battle for the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship came down to three schools which had jostled for supremacy during the regular season — UCLA, USC and Arizona State. The Sun Devils rose to the occasion when it mattered most, winning the title by eight shots over the second-place Bruins and nine ahead of the Trojans. ASU combined to shoot six-over par during the final 36 holes, while second-round leader UCLA faltered by going 25-over for the same stretch. USC had a one-stroke advantage over the Sun Devils entering the final round but posted a 301 to fall off the pace. The 72-hole event was held at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md. and concluded May 22. USC’s Jennifer Song finished second in the individual title race, one stroke behind Purdue’s Maria Hernandez. UCLA sophomore Maria Jose Uribe, competing in her final collegiate event, finished tied for eighth. Alice Kim, a Walnut native and sophomore at UC Davis, competed as an individual and tied for eighth. For complete results, visit golfstat.com. |
