Five Southern California golfers are among 64 who advanced to match play at the 109th U.S. Amateur at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., while three other local players came up just short in a bid to continue. In the 36-hole stroke-play qualifying portion of the event, Cameron Tringale (Laguna Niguel) posted the highest finish of any Southland golfer by tying for ninth, carding rounds of 1-under-par 69 on Monday and 4-over-par 74 on Tuesday for a 3-over-par 143 total. Bakersfield’s Bhavik Patel qualified, posting 5-over-par 145 to finish in a 12-man tie for 20th. Connor Driscoll (Encinitas) also moved on after finishing tied for 32nd at 6-over-par 146. Brett Kanda (La Crescenta) joined soon-to-be-professional Rickie Fowler (Murrieta) in a 16-man tie for 45th at 7-over-par 147s. Fowler was in contention for medalist honors after a first round 71, but faltered with a second round 76. Tim Jackson, a 50-year-old out of Germantown, Tenn. earned medalist honors, coming in at even-par 140. He is the oldest stroke-play winner in the history of the event. Sam Chien (San Diego), Tim Hogarth (Northridge) and Matt Hoffenberg (Simi Valley) all finished at 8-over-par 148 and found themselves in a 27-man playoff Wednesday morning, with only four spots available for match play. None of them advanced. Other notable Southern Californians who failed to advance to match play were Austin Graham (San Clemente), Jay Hwang (San Diego) and Jason Bittick (Ladera Ranch).
