On July 27, multiple courses around the country hosted 36-hole sectional qualifiers for the 2009 U.S. Amateur, which will be held August 24-30 at Southern Hills Country Club and Cedar Ridge Country Club in Tulsa, Okla. Three Southern California courses were among the qualifying sites. At Glendora Country Club, Jason Bittick of Ladera Ranch earned medalist honors by carding a 3-under par 141. Josh Dupont (Poway) and Greg Moss (Sherman Oaks) tied at 2-under-par 142 to earn bids. Philip Chian of Covina and John Kier Abdon (Philippines) were alternates, finishing at 143 and 145, respectively. At Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach, Todd Pieri of Simi Valley grabbed medalist honors by one stroke over Beau Hossler Jr. (Rancho Santa Margarita), Blake Nicolai (Long Beach) and Charles Kavanaugh (Irvine). Pieri finished with a 1-under-par 143, while Hossler Jr., Nicolai and Kavanaugh all shot even-par 144s. Despite the tie, Kavanaugh lost in a playoff and fell to first-alternate status. Michael Moorhead of Newport Beach earned the second alternate spot after carding a 145. At Red Hill Country Club in Rancho Cucamonga, incoming UC-Davis junior Austin Graham — who won the 110th SCGA Amateur Championship at Wilshire Country Club in Los Angeles earlier this month — won medalist honors after firing a 4-under par 140, beating runner-ups Sam Chien (San Diego) and Chris Gilman (Yorba Linda) by three shots after they both carded 143s. Boris Stantchev (Long Beach) and Gary Havro (Claremont) earned alternate spots after finishing at even-par 144. On July 30, Western Hills Golf & Country Club in Chino Hills hosted a qualifier. Tao Huang of Chinese Taipei won by three shots over Patrick Cantlay (Los Alamitos) and Michael Mendez (San Diego). Huang shot 4-under-par 139, while Cantlay and Mendez finished at 2-under-par 142. Nabbing alternate honors were Arnold Yoon (Buena Park) and Chi-Hsien Hsieh (Chinese Taipei) who shot 143 and 144, respectively. Also qualifying for the event was Samuel Cyr (Makawao, Hawaii), an incoming senior at Point Loma Nazarene. Cyr earned medalist honors by carding a 6-under-par 138 at his qualifying site, the Colgate University Seven Oaks Golf Club in Hamilton, N.Y. For more sectional results, visit usga.org. |
