Llano's Crystalaire Golf Club played host to a U.S. Senior Open sectional qualifying on June 30, where 80 players were competing for two qualifying spots and two alternate spots. John Wilson of Indian Wells scorched the field, earning medalist honors with a six-under-par 66. Mark "Beer Man" Johnson, who won the 2005 Toshiba Classic, grabbed the second automatic bid with a 69. There was a three-way playoff for the two alternate spots between Frank Acker (Henderson, Nev.), Pat Laverty (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Westchester's Todd Yoshitake. The Nevadans proved too much for Yoshitake, Riviera Country Club's Director of Golf, and he failed to qualify. Others that missed the mark were PGA professional Jerry Wisz of Alhambra Municipal Golf Course and Stadium Golf Center's Gary Griggs. Qualifiers will move on to the U.S. Senior Open, which will be July 27-August 2 at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind. Full results can be viewed here. |
