Three locals are moving on to the third round at the 2009 U.S. Women's Amateur. The 109th playing of the event is this week at Old Warson Country Club in St. Louis, Mo. La Quinta's Jennifer Johnson finished tied for 28th in the 36-hole stroke play qualifying, carding a 5-over-par 147. She then destroyed Calle Nelson (Nashville, Tenn.) 7 & 6 in her first round of match play. In the round of 32 she bested Amelia Lewis (Jacksonville, Fla.) 3 & 2. Sydnee Michaels of Temecula finished just behind Johnson in stroke play, carding a 149 and finishing in a tie for 46th. She also cruised through her first round match, beating Grace Na (Oakland) 6 & 5. She won her second round match over Whitney Neuhauser (Charlottesville, Va.) 3 & 2. Rowland Heights' Tiffany Lua, an incoming freshman at UCLA and a selection for this year's Ping Junior Solheim Cup, has also moved on to the third round. In stroke play she finished tied for 6th at even-par 142. In the first round of match play she bested Jenny Shin (Torrance) 4 & 3, and followed that with a 3 & 1 victory over Brooke Beeler (Butler, Ill.) in the second round. USC's Lizette Salas (Azusa) lost to her teammate Jennifer Song (Ann Arbor, Mich.) 4 & 2 in the second round and stroke play medalist Danielle Kang (Thousand Oaks) lost to Amelia Lewis (Jacksonville, Fla.) 2 & 1 in the first round of match play.
