Locals advance to U.S. Women’s Open

Park, Gulugian, Kim and Drolson among Southland amateurs to qualify at Pasatiempo Golf Club.

BY ELI MILLERPublished: June, 2009

On Monday, June 16, plenty of golfers with ties to Southern California made it through 36 holes of sectional qualifying to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Open at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa. from July 9-12:

At Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, Calif.: A quartet of Southland amateurs — Kristen Park (Buena Park), Ani Gulugian (Irvine), Alice Kim (Walnut) and Kaitlin Drolson (Rancho Sante Fe) — tied for fourth at three-over par (147) to move on. Tiffany Lua of Rowland Heights and Caryn Wilson of Rancho Mirage also qualified by shooting 148, while 14-year-old Alison Lee of Valencia won a two-hole, sudden-death playoff to grab the final spot at the site.

Plenty of noteworthy Southern Californians failed to qualify, including UCLA players Stephanie Kono, Tiffany Joh, Sydnee Michaels, Brianna Do and Ryann O’Toole, Long Beach State’s Kay Hoey and Lee Lopez, UC-Irvine’s Joy Trotter, and Jenny Shin (Torrance). Full results here.

At Carolina Trace Country Club in Sanford, N.C.: Murrieta amateur Ashleigh Albrecht won the last qualifying spot in a three-way playoff. Riverside’s Nicole Smith missed the cut. Full results here.

At Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md.: A field stacked with LPGA Tour professionals saw three Southern Californians qualify: Irene Cho (La Habra), Brandie Burton (San Bernardino) and Mikaela Parmlid (Venice). Cho and Parmlid also both played golf at USC.
