![]() Riviera will host the American Cancer Society’s Southern California Invitational in May. Fund-raising became one of Merry’s first projects for the regional chapter of the American Cancer Society when she joined in the mid-1980s, and she invited her husband, a CPA, to participate. “I was an easy recruit,” said George, who heads the certified public accounting firm George H. McCrimlisk & Co. At the time, Merry was battling Hodgkin’s disease, a cancer of the lymph system she was diagnosed with at age 24 that claimed her life at 34. The year after Merry died, the American Cancer Society held its first fund-raising golf tournament at MountainGate Country Club in Los Angeles. “That first tournament is a shadow of what it is today,” McCrimlisk said. “I served as chairman for the first 11 years, and it grew a little bit each year.” Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades now is the host course for the group’s Southern California Invitational, which is considered one of the most significant charity golf tournaments in the country. The May 24 event is a modified best-ball tournament with a shotgun start. Activities include a live auction, swing analysis, putting contest, barbecue lunch, buffet and an awards ceremony. The Invitational not only raises funds but also awareness of the American Cancer Society’s research, education, advocacy, and free patient service programs. “The evolution of cancer treatment that has taken place in the last 20 years is truly unbelievable,” McCrimlisk said. “With everybody’s help and participation, it will continue to move forward.” For those unable to tee it up on tournament day, other ways to participate include sponsorship or volunteer service on the day of the event.
