That prompted Smeal and Strobel, the tournament director at Carlton Oaks, to establish the Hardest Tournament Ever, which will debut on Sunday, August 30. The two-player best-ball event at Carlton Oaks is $100 per player and begins with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Carlton Oaks — a Perry Dye design with a rating of 75.6 from the back tees — is tough enough, but Smeal and Strobel want to see carnage. The layout will be converted into a par-70 that plays about 7,300 yards. The par-4 fifth, usually a strategic short hole that features the smallest green on the course, will play as a 240-yard par 3. The tee box on the par-5 13th will be pushed back, making the hole play about 700 yards. Perhaps more intimidating than the length alterations is the fact that Smeal and Strobel have reserved the right to put pins wherever they want on the greens. “You’ll have to play almost perfect golf to even break 80,” Smeal said. The fee includes range balls, two drink tickets, a barbecue dinner after the round and a prize pool.
