![]() The famous par-3 17th hole on the Stadium Course at La Quinta's PGA West. Come this January, add another reason to spend some time in the Coachella Valley: Competing in the inaugural Palm Springs Amateur Championship. Welcome to the perfect storm of amateur play: sublime desert weather, prime-conditioned La Quinta and PGA West golf courses and a chance to stay in a sweet casita suite at La Quinta Resort and Club, which is a major sponsor of the event. Playing host are Owen Hoskinson and John Tipping, the co-producers of the Seattle Golf Show that’s slated for early February. They tout the Palm Springs Amateur, set for January 7-10, as a net, stroke-play event patterned after the popular Pac Am held in Bend, Ore., and Nevada’s Mesquite Amateur. The appeal of playing nationally recognized La Quinta and PGA West courses just 10 days before the PGA Tour’s Bob Hope Classic certainly can’t be denied. The Palm Springs Amateur courses include La Quinta, PGA West’s Stadium and Nicklaus Tournament courses and La Quinta Resort’s Dunes and Mountain courses. Another unique aspect to the Palm Springs Amateur is that not one, but four champions will be crowned — one for each division, including Open, Men’s, Senior Men’s and Women’s. The $575 (early entry) and $625 (standard entry) fees get you three rounds of golf (with cart and range balls), a $100 gift card to Lumpy’s Golf of La Quinta and Cathedral City, tournament shirt and hat, playing coupons redeemable at one of the local casinos, and prizes and trophies. Not included in the entry fee are lodging, transportation, additional meals and practice rounds. You’ll also have the chance to win a three-night stay at La Quinta Resort by being among the first 200 registrants. Early birds will be entered into a drawing for a complimentary deluxe suite during the event. The last day to register is Dec. 11. After this date, registration will be considered on a space-available basis. The 54-hole Palm Springs Amateur Championship is a stroke-play, net-format event with flights based on gender, age and handicap. Players compete in three rounds of golf, with each round staged at a different golf course each day. The top two players of each flight will participate in a fourth (championship) round at SilverRock Resort. For more details, visit palmspringsamateur.com or call (206) 818-4653. |
