Meeting of the Minds

The third annual World Golf Fitness Summit comes to Anaheim.

BY ELI MILLERPublished: October, 2008

In 2006 and 2007, the Titleist Performance Institute brought together many of the world’s foremost authorities in golf fitness for the first two World Golf Fitness Summits in Orlando, Fla.

This year, the summit has come to Southern California and will be held at the Anaheim Convention Center from Thursday, Oct. 16 through Sunday, Oct. 19. The event is open to anyone with a vested interest in golf fitness, medicine, nutrition, biomechanics or coaching. Over 50 speakers from 11 countries will lend their expertise over the four-day period.

“It’s amazing how the golf fitness industry has progressed in the last five or 10 years,” said Stephanie Overbaugh of Body Balance for Performance of Orange County. “The fact that it’s in TPI’s backyard means it’s probably going to be a bigger event. If you want to be at the forefront of this industry, this is the place to be.”

Although the summit is funded and managed by Titleist, the equipment manufacturer sees this as a forum for any organization are able to offer or derive information in golf’s physiological realm.

“We don’t want it to be about Titleist, we want it to be about fitness,” said Dr. Greg Rose, co-founder of TPI.
After morning sessions with three main speakers, afternoon breakout sessions will be divided between one of four rooms: fitness, golf, health and other (nutrition, biomechanics, etc.). Even if guests are conflicted by which afternoon meeting to attend, the summit plans on recording every speaker for a DVD package.

The World Golf Fitness Summit reflects the momentum of the fitness field in a time when the number of new golfers has declined compared to recent decades.

“We know we can grow the game of golf just by taking the people who are in the game right now and helping them play more,” Rose said. “A lot of them can’t play because their shoulders or backs hurt. If we get [fitness experts] to prove to everybody that there are simple things you can do that allow you to play more and play longer, it’s great for golfers because they can enjoy the game more.”
