Marty La Roche knows how to organize, prioritize and have a good time. Those three ingredients are key to the TaylorMade World Masters of Junior Golf Tournament, slated for July 19-23 at Angel Park Golf Club in Las Vegas, Nev. The five-day tournament kicks off with an optional par-3 contest and a day reserved for practice rounds. Then comes two days of competition, and after cuts are made on the last day there is the final round of play followed by an awards ceremony. The tournament debuted last summer with 100 players. This year, La Roche hopes to triple that number, and he’s already signed up players from as far away as Costa Rica, New Zealand, Thailand, the Philippines and Malaysia. “I have one event a year, and I want it to be grandiose,” said La Roche, who’s also director of instruction at Tijeras Creek Golf Club in Rancho Santa Margarita and winner of four SCPGA junior golf awards. “Eventually, I’d like to get the number of participants up to 1,000. My goal is to make this the biggest junior golf event in the world.” Players are matched with a caddie who wears a caddie bib with their name. What’s unique is that players can walk the course with their parents. The atmosphere of the tournament — which includes 11 divisions open to boys and girls ages 6 to 17 — promotes friendly competition. “We chose Las Vegas because it’s fun for parents, and the venue we chose is larger so we can hold different age divisions at the same time,” La Roche said. “Since participants are together during the entire event, there’s more of a bonding experience.” For more information or to sign up, visit worldmastersofjuniorgolf.com. |
