Shrinking golf demand and more quality public courses may result in Lost Canyons Golf Club building homes on one of its courses and turning the other private. “We’ve gone to the city to ask them to reconsider the original plan in order to allow us to build homes on the Shadow Course, and then turning the Sky Course into a private facility,” said Jay Colliatie, general manager of the Simi Valley facility. The proposed changes would need to be approved by a variety of agencies before any formal plans are made. “It’s a combination of things,” Colliatie said of the proposed changes. “When we opened in 2001, there were a couple of courses in the immediate area, and now there are five or six and they’re all very good facilities. But we’re going after a much smaller group of golfers these days and the demand is not there to sustain all these public courses. So I think it makes more sense to focus on 18 holes, and I think there is more of a demand in this area for private golf than there is for public.” Ideally, a private Sky Course would include an enhanced clubhouse, swimming pool, tennis courts and spa, Colliatie said. “I think it’d be great for Simi Valley, it would be great for the existing public courses and it’d be a great, exciting opportunity for us,” he said. When the opportunity might come, however, isn’t known at this time. “The city is going to take a very close look at any plans in order to make sure it’s the best product possible,” Colliatie said. “The city fathers are very proud of their city and they’ll look at everything from traffic to environmental impact.” |
