Get in the game

Southern California women have many options for taking lessons, social interaction and feeling comfortable on the golf course.

By Christi WhittemorePublished: October, 2008

Between hitting the range and competing on the course is a daunting trek through lessons, trials and errors. Luckily, women in Southern California don’t have to navigate that rocky road alone.

Choosing a golf support or guidance group depends on your motivation, skill level and schedule. Here are five options:

• Women on Course “is not just about getting the ball in the hole,” said president and founder Donna Hoffman. “It’s about making women comfortable with all of the benefits the game has to offer,” including friendships, shopping and wine.

Women on Course organizes four events each year in Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego, and non-members are welcome.

For more information, visit womenoncourse.com.

• The Women’s Global Network was started two years ago in San Diego as the Women’s Golf Network. The casual outings quickly grew into a networking organization with chapters in Long Beach, San Francisco and Dallas.

While the network primarily focuses on larger causes, the San Diego chapter still holds a monthly Saturday or Sunday scramble and luncheon at an area executive course. Non-members can attend one golf outing as a guest.

For more information, visit wgn-global.com.

• The Executive Women’s Golf Association has nearly 20,000 members and more than 120 chapters, including ones in Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, Palm Springs and Las Vegas.

The chapters host seminars, clinics, business and social networking functions, weekend golf outings, fundraising events and two to three tournaments. You need not be an executive to join, and guests are welcome for many chapter events.

For more information, visit ewga.com.

• Club MILO — or Meeting Industry Ladies Organization — is for women working in the meeting and hospitality industries who want to stay on top of their game, on and off the course.

For more information, visit clubmilo.com.

• Join the women’s club at your local course. It can be a supportive place where you can improve your game, polish your etiquette and meet new people with similar interests. Members also can establish an official handicap and play in club tournaments and other events.

Annual dues include membership in the Southern California Women’s Golf Association, which provides services to nearly 200 public and private courses in the Southland. Inquire in your local pro shop for further information.
