Adrian Cardoza

The head pro at Lost Canyons savors the joy and satisfaction that come from being in the game

By Southland Golf MagazinePublished: June, 2007

Adrian Cardoza’s golf career began in 2002 when he attended the Professional Golfers Career College in Temecula. After graduating in 2003, he accepted a position at Lost Canyons Golf Club in Simi Valley as an assistant pro; he became the head professional a little over a year ago. The inspiration to become a teacher came from his father.
“He told me, ‘whatever you do, make sure it makes you happy and have no regrets,’” said Cardoza, who began playing golf when he was 12 years old.

What’s the most common problem you see in your students, and how do you fix it?
Alignment. I lay down two clubs at their feet to make a T. One is used for alignment and the other for ball position.

What’s the most challenging thing about being a golf teacher?
Watching students get discouraged. You work with individuals who want to see results right away and they must understand that improvements take time and practice.

What’s your best round ever and where?
A 69 on the Sky Course here at Lost Canyons.

Who’s swing on the PGA Tour do you most admire and why?
Of course, Fred Couples. It’s so smooth and effortless but generates a lot of power.
What’s in your bag?
Nike irons and woods. Cleveland wedges and my Scotty Cameron putter.

What words or phrase do you most overuse on the course?
“Not again.”

What’s the best golf tip you’ve ever received?
“You’re not good enough to get mad.”

What first attracted you to the game?
The challenge. I could never find
any left-handed clubs when I started,
so I taught myself how to play right handed.
What’s the most satisfying thing about being a golf teacher?
Watching students being able to hit the most feared club in their bag.

What is your favorite part of the game?
Putting. I consider myself a really good putter.

What’s your motto on the course?
Have fun. I rarely get out to play, but when I do, I try to enjoy the day and the company.

What is your favorite new product?
My Nike CCI irons. I absolutely love them.   SG
