Talk show host Carson Daly lettered all four years in college golf and dreamed of playing on the PGA Tour. He attended Loyola Marymount University on a golf scholarship, where he studied theology. Daly abandoned his dreams of playing professionally and becoming a priest, however, and later got into radio and television. These days, he serves as the host of late night’s “Last Call with Carson Daly.” How did you get started in golf? My stepdad owned the golf shop at Riviera Country Club, so he got me into golf when I was a junior. What is your handicap? 10. How often do you play? I recently moved from New York to L.A. and my membership is back East. I usually try and play when I can. What is your best round? I broke 70 at Ironwood Country Club [in Palm Desert] when I was a junior. If you could change one thing about your game, what would it be? I would stop trying to kill it and slow my swing down. What are your favorite courses in Southern California? I love Riviera. I am biased, but it is such a great layout. It has natural terrain and the great history. I love it. What is the strangest thing you’ve seen on a golf course? Roger Clemens hitting a woman and she’s still alive. Imagine getting hit with a golf ball by Roger Clemens. She was hit in the leg and she was limping, but she still followed us. What is your dream foursome? My stepdad, Arnold [Palmer] and Gisele Bundchen, the model. Best moment on the golf course? Being at Augusta National with my stepdad. We’d finished our round and Arnold was teeing off on No. 1 and he came up to us and said, “Hey gents, how’d we play today?” while he shook our hands as it was lightly raining. It was a magical moment. SG |
