Larry Atlas knew from the beginning why he wanted to become a golf instructor. “During my first lesson, I realized how much fun we were having,” said the head PGA golf professional at Robinson Ranch Golf Club in Santa Clarita. Robinson, who earned his Class A status in January, has been helping students improve since 1992. What’s the most common problem you see in your students and how do you fix it? Poor posture and setup. We work primarily on fundamental drills and mirror work to build a good foundation. What’s your favorite golf instruction book and why? “Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf,” by Ben Hogan. Hogan was simple. Who is your mentor or role model and why? Noam Pitlik, who taught me how to enjoy life. What’s the most satisfying thing about being a golf teacher? There is nothing better than seeing someone’s smile when they get it. Who’s swing on the PGA Tour do you most admire and why? Chad Campbell — as simple as it gets. How old were you when you started playing golf? I hit balls when I was a kid with my parents, but didn’t start playing golf until I was 24. What was the first thing that attracted you to the game? I was attracted by the integrity of the game. What professional golfer would you most like to be reincarnated as and why? I think I would want to be reincarnated as Ben Hogan because of his no-nonsense approach to the game — and his dedication and determination to be the best. What’s your greatest achievement in golf? Earning my PGA member status. What’s your personal motto on the course? Just have fun! Who are your golf heroes? My heroes are anyone who has the courage to pick up this great game of golf. SG |
