STROKE OF THE DAY |

Lew Cooper, the head golf professional at River View Golf Course in Santa Ana, enjoyed a particularly good stretch of competitive success during the early part of the decade, during which he played an event on the South Course at Los Serranos Golf & Country Club in Chino Hills. But Cooper didn’t start the two-day tournament in an ideal manner. “I normally get to the course between 40 minutes and an hour before I tee off, but that day I was running late,” he said. Lacking his normal practice time, Cooper drove it out of bounds on the par-5 opening hole. He had immediately lost two shots, but needed only four more shots to save bogey. After an eagle on the next hole, his opening shot became an afterthought. He followed with birdies on the seventh and eighth holes and a three-putt bogey on the par-3 ninth gave him a score of 2 under. Cooper again shook off the miscue with birdies at the 10th and 11th holes, then followed those with three more at 13, 14 and 16. Then came the par-5 18th hole. “I hit a huge drive and had about 270 to the green,” Cooper said. “I hit a 3-wood as hard as I could to about 6 feet and made eagle.” With that finish, he had a 65 on the par-74 track and a new course record.
