Comedian Ray Romano always has been intertwined with golf, whether it be as a prop on his show “Everybody Loves Raymond” or playing in PGA Tour celebrity pro-ams such as the Bob Hope Classic or the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. He and fellow actor/comedian Kevin James once made a documentary called “Making the Cut” about playing in the famed event on the Monterey Peninsula. What is your handicap? They got me as 13, but it’s more like a 15. How did you get into the game? When I was 16, me and my buddies would go to pitch and putts and bet. It was just a new way to gamble. What is your best round? An 80 at Morgan Run [Resort and Club in Rancho Santa Fe] during the Toyota Celebrity Classic hosted by Stan Humphries. What are your favorite Southern California courses? I am a member of Lakeside Country Club [in Burbank] and El Caballero [in Tarzana]. I like both of those. What’s the strangest thing you’ve seen on a golf course? A lady once asked me to sign her dog. I signed her dog. What do you like most about the game? I love that it’s a great equalizer. You can be a world-class athlete, you could be a musician or you could be a teacher and everyone is kind of equal, except for the pros. That annoys me. One thing you’d like to change about your game? I wish I could take a divot. Who would be in your ultimate foursome? Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Jackie Gleason. What’s the most money you’ve ever won on the golf course? Is my wife going to read this? Whatever it was, they haven’t paid me yet. SG |
