High praise

The 2008 Southern California PGA award winners comprise some of the region’s most accomplished professionals in a variety of fields.

GREG PRUDHAM
WARNER SPRINGS RANCH
GOLF PROFESSIONAL OF THE YEAR
Quotable: “Being honored as the Golf Professional of the Year is an incredible honor. I am extremely thankful for the opportunity to learn from some of the past award winners — people like Tom Addis, Jeff Johnson and Gary Setting,” said Prudham, who graduated from the San Diego Golf Academy in 1987.

DALE ABRAHAM
EAST VALLEY GOLF CLUB, BEAUMONT
TEACHER OF THE YEAR
Quotable: “Recognition by your peers, who are acutely knowledgeable about your sport or profession, means so much more than any other type of award,” said Abraham, who graduated from UC San Diego and helped lead the Tritons to the NCAA Division III national championship in 1993.

DAVID NESBITT
SEA PINES GOLF RESORT, LOS OSOS
ASSISTANT PROFESSIONAL OF THE YEAR
Quotable: “It is extremely rewarding that my efforts as an assistant at the facilities I have worked at and my involvement and participation at the chapter level has paid off,” said Nesbitt, a Thousand Oaks native who was 13 when he took his first golf lesson from Roger Rockefeller at Simi Hills Golf Course.

STEVE CREPS
CATHEDRAL CANYON COUNTRY CLUB, CATHEDRAL CITY
CLUBFITTER OF THE YEAR
Quotable: “Winning this award means the world to me. I am humbled and honored at the same time. In the 28 years I have been teaching and 22 years in clubfitting, I have never treated work like a job — it’s always been a privileged career,” said Creps, an Oregon native who made a hole-in-one during his first ever round of golf.

ED WINIECKI
SHANDIN HILLS GOLF COURSE, SAN BERNARDINO
BILL STRAUSBAUGH AWARD
Quotable: “Just being nominated is a humbling feeling. I am reminded every day how lucky I am not only being part of the greatest organization in the world but also to have the privilege and pleasure of doing my hobby for a living,” said Winiecki, who started his career as an assistant at Carmel Mountain Ranch.

KEN FERRELL
PROFESSIONAL GOLFERS CAREER COLLEGE, TEMECULA
HORTON SMITH AWARD
Quotable: “Winning the Horton Smith Award for the chapter and section is a great honor, especially when recognition comes from your peers,” said Ferrell, who graduated from the San Diego Golf Academy in 1978 and began his career as an assistant professional at Yorba Linda Country Club.

TOM SARGENT
MESA VERDE COUNTRY CLUB, COSTA MESA
HONORARY PGA LIFE MEMBER
Quotable: “I am very proud of what the association represents and what it stands for. It has been a thrill and privilege to be a part of molding both the section and the national body,” said Sargent, who grew up in San Diego and didn’t catch the golf bug until he was 23.

BOB KUMMER
SANTA BARBARA
HONORARY PGA LIFE MEMBER
Quotable: “My 10-year association with the SCPGA has been a wonderful opportunity to give back. I was elated to learn that I have been elected a life member. It will forever be one of my most treasured moments,” said Kummer, whose professional career spans more than 40 years in banking and finance.

DON ANDERSON
HUNTINGTON BEACH
HONORARY PGA LIFE MEMBER
Quotable: “I have so much respect for how multi-talented a PGA professional has to be these days. I cannot begin to tell you how honored I am to accept this award,” said Anderson, who has been in the club design business for nearly 40 years.

PAULA OLSEN
MARTY TREGNAN GOLF ACADEMY, LOS ANGELES
JUNIOR GOLF LEADER
Quotable: “Once you see the number of nominees, the depth of the information and the great things our fellow golf professionals are doing in all of the chapters in the section, it makes being selected as the winner even more special,” said Olsen, who has been working at the Tregnan Golf Academy for 22 years.

TERRY BEARDSLEY
ELDORADO COUNTRY CLUB, INDIAN WELLS
MERCHANDISER OF THE YEAR (PRIVATE)
Quotable: “It is the support from our membership that has been paramount in elevating our shop to its status today. After all, it is for them to which we tailor our service,” said Beardsley, who has been in the golf business for more than 30 years and at Eldorado Country Club since 1997.

MERCHANDISER OF THE YEAR (RESORT)
