What is it about this game?
How does the simple act of hitting a ball with a stick translate into such a wellspring of dedication, devotion, inventiveness, imagination, verve and individual and communal effort?
The answer is that golf cannot be distilled into one simple act. It is a complex enterprise executed by passionate people. It is—let’s not argue about it—the best game ever invented. And, as such, it requires the best to emerge in all people who wish to make the game a part of their lives.
The five people on the following pages have embraced golf as few others have, and the game, as it will, has embraced them in return. Through their efforts—from equipment innovation to visionary teaching to capturing the eyes of the world (and beyond) they have compelled us to look at the game in a different, brighter light.
We at Southland Golf are privileged to welcome them as members of the magazine’s Hall of Fame for 2011.
