Better known for his outlandish outfits and antics as the drummer for rock band No Doubt, Long Beach native Adrian Young is ready to return to his golf roots.

Young started playing golf as a teen, but the Southern California music scene soon occupied his focus and one group in particular grabbed his attention: No Doubt.

Young frequented the band’s concerts and was inspired to learn to play the drums. By chance, No Doubt was looking for a new drummer a few years later. Young auditioned and the rest is musical history.

While touring, Young has been able to play some fabulous courses, and recently he participated in the Cox Celebrity Championship hosted by Drew Brees at Morgan Run Resort and Club in Rancho Santa Fe.

How do you think your week went?
I played [poorly] but I definitely had a good time.

What made it so special for you?
Well, playing with Drew [Brees] and Chris Chandler, it was super easygoing and they are fun dudes. Drew is a good friend of mine. When you get to play with your friends, it’s always cool.

How did you get started playing golf?
My dad started me when I was about 14.

So was he your inspiration to keep up with the game?
Yes. He played college golf and then I played high school golf, and then I quit playing once I joined No Doubt. And then I started up again.

Did you get the chance to play golf in different cities while on tour with No Doubt?
I’ve played some of the greatest golf courses in the world because of it.

What would be your favorite if you had to choose one?
Well, across the United States, Augusta National was the best.

What was your favorite or most memorable day on the golf course?
I think my favorite day of golf was at the Old Course at St. Andrews. It was raining on every hole, but it didn’t matter because the overall experience made it my favorite day.

Including yourself, who would be included in your ultimate foursome?
Jack [Nicklaus], Tiger [Woods] and my dad.
