Alice Cooper

The rock-'n'-roll legend kicked his addiction to alcohol after becoming addicted to the golf course.

By JOHN REGERPublished: October, 2007

Alice Cooper began playing golf more than 10 years ago to kick his addiction to alcohol. Now the former rocker is hooked on golf and plays to a 5 handicap in several charity events a year. His best round ever is a 67 at Camelback Country Club in Phoenix and says his favorite places to play in the Southland are Valencia and Bel-Air country clubs.

How did you get into golf?
I quit drinking. I played 36 holes every day for a year. I figured if I was going to play this game I wanted to be able to play it. If you are going to go out there and hack it around, that's fine, but I really wanted to play it.

How often do you play?
Every day. I figured I drank every day, I should play golf every day. Well, I still drink everyday, but instead of alcohol it's Diet Coke.

What course haven't you played that you want to?
I have played every major course except Augusta National. I've been invited there two or three times and every time I get invited, there is some sort of disaster that keeps me out.

What is the strangest thing you've seen on a golf course?
We play a game called psycho skins. The idea is if you make a skin you have to par or birdie the next hole. The other guys' job is to do anything in their power to keep you from making it except for getting in your line or physically touching you.

What would be your ultimate foursome?
Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. That would have been the greatest foursome of all time. You can imagine what that would have been like, the insanity behind that.

Your best moment on a golf course?
Two double eagles and three aces. The double eagles were pretty amazing.

What's the most money you've ever won on the golf course?
I won $1,400 in Reno - shot 68 - at a celebrity charity event.  SG
