Grich, who lives in Coto de Caza, works for the Angels in public relations and marketing, and is a member of the Angels Alumni Association, which will hold a charity fund-raiser tournament at Pelican Hill Golf Club on November 11. Grich, who still plays a lot of golf, is excited about a product developed by an Irvine company called Power Balance. What is Power Balance? Basically it’s a wrist band that contains a hologram that has been downloaded with a software program. It gives off a low-frequency resonance that, in some way, increases your balance and your core strength. Everybody’s skeptical of it at first, but once they try it they’re absolutely amazed. How does it help golfers? It helps make your swings more consistent by maintaining your balance. So many times, golf is just a matter of being one-eighth of an inch off. That’s often the difference between keeping it in the fairway or not. And if your balance is improved, your consistency is improved, and that’s going to help anybody’s scoring. Describe your golf game. I’m currently a 2.3 handicap and I’ve always been a pretty long hitter. But I’m not always the straightest. The weakest part of my game is putting. It’s been hard for me since day one. My buddies at Coto de Caza always kid me because I play with a different putter all the time. When were you first exposed to golf? When I was around 13, a group of my friends would play a nine-hole course in Long Beach — little Recreation Park. It cost 35 cents and we played barefoot. We would play baseball five days a week and golf two days a week. What’s your greatest accomplishment on the golf course? I shot a 64 in a pro-am event on the Celebrity Player’s Tour, and once won a long drive contest with a 347-yard drive. What are some of your favorite courses in Southern California? I’m a member of Coto de Caza, and used to be a member of Virginia Country Club. Another favorite is Shady Canyon, which is an awesome Tom Fazio course. If I were playing baseball today, I could afford a membership there. And I love Bel-Air Country Club. Including yourself, who would play in your ultimate golf foursome? Dwight David Eisenhower, Tiger Woods and Walter Hagen. |
