![]() Cameron Tringale is one of the best players in Georgia Tech history (COURTESY: Titleist). The Laguna Niguel native never missed a tournament in his four years at Georgia Tech, recording four victories and 22 top-10 finishes in 46 events. He had the second-lowest stroke average in school history (71.8), bettering major winners such as David Duval and Stewart Cink. Tringale qualified for the PGA Tour by finishing tied for 19th in the final stage of Qualifying School last December, closing with rounds of 69-67. Reaching the pinnacle of professional golf straight from college isn’t easy, but those who know his game aren’t shocked. “He was almost a professional before he got here,” said Bruce Heppler, the men’s golf coach at Georgia Tech. “If he maintains a positive attitude and work ethic, there will be one day where he’ll contend in majors. He’s that good.” Said Tom Sargent, the PGA head professional at Mesa Verde Country Club in Costa Mesa who has coached the 22-year-old for six years: “He was always very confident about how good he was and what he was going to be.” Tringale is proud of how far he’s come because of the commitment he made back in high school. “I told myself if I’m going to do this, I’m going to put all of my resources and focus into having a career on the PGA Tour, so let’s build a plan to get there,” he said. “I stayed on track and did the right things, and it paid off. Everything kind of went according to plan, and here I am.” Tringale has struggled early in 2010, failing to make the cut in each of his first four events. Nevertheless, based on how far he’s come, it’s not impossible to think he won’t turn it around soon. |
