It’s an easy concept for the general manager of the Chino Hills facility to embrace, considering that his parents have had a lease on the property since 1953 and his four brothers also have roles in the operation. “It’s a wonderful way to learn a craft,” said Kramer, 62, who worked at the course during the summer of his junior high and high school years. “When something is handed down from parents and grandparents, it’s special, and it becomes our obligation to see their visions through to the best of our ability.” The vision at Los Serranos is simple: Respect the game and its values and make sure every visitor has the best day possible. “Being in a recreational setting like this, we know people come happy, and it’s just a real joy to see them go home happy,” Kramer said. For John Chen, coming and going has been a blast since he won free green fees for life by acing a 130-yard shot on the course’s 19th hole in August 2008. Chen, who practices real estate law in Irvine, earned the right for his shot of a lifetime by making a 45-foot putt on a practice green near the cart barn that automatically earns players a free round of golf. “He was thrilled, to say the least,” Kramer said about Chen. “Which is nice, because that’s what we’re looking for.” Los Serranos also is making the game accessible for area children with its Kid’s Golf Park, which opened in December 2007. The free facility has nine holes ranging from 25 to 50 yards in length, with Bermuda grass between the artificial teeing areas and greens. They even supplies plastic practice balls and junior-length clubs if needed. “We thought it would be a good idea because it’s something that kids will enjoy and parents will see the value of immediately,” Kramer said. “It’s an idea that works perfectly with what we’re trying to accomplish each day.” |
