We don’t often get the opportunity to hang out with billionaires, but last month we had the chance to spend some time with one of our favorite golf course owners — Donald Trump — as he spoke to more than 200 people about the multi-million dollar villas he’s planning adjacent to Trump National, his track in Rancho Palos Verdes. As we casually dined on some of the fine grub at the event, we were met suddenly by Mike van der Goes, the general manager of the golf course. “Give me your plates,” he demanded. “Mr. Trump would like to speak with you right away.” After nearly choking on our sushi, we followed van der Goes through a gallery of admirers surrounding Mr. Trump. Then he announced: “Mr. Trump, Eric and Rob are here.” Mr. Trump spun around like he’d just seen a runway model and greeted us like we were celebrities. Then, to our surprise, he whisked us away from the crowd out onto a veranda overlooking the golf course. As always, he was charismatic, gregarious and funny. He asked us questions about the magazine, the golf course and life in general, and we discussed his latest real estate project there. (More on that next month.) And as we gazed out over the golf course, with the sun setting over the sparkling Pacific Ocean and the emerald green fairways of Trump National, he gently reminded us: “Is this the best course in the state, or what?” We have to admit, after playing the golf course a half a dozen times and experiencing its character and all its subtleties, it’s hard to argue with the guy. |
