Donald Trump

Golf course owner talks about his favorite
layout in Southern California
— Trump National.

BY ELI MILLER

With majestic views and challenging holes, Trump National Golf Club in Palos Verdes is one of the most high-profile courses in the Los Angeles area.

Recently, patrons have been taking advantage of the Trump VIP card program. For $550, members enjoy a discounted green fee of $195 plus city tax — nearly half off the weekend rate and 30 percent off the weekday rate. It is valid for one year from the date of purchase.

Business has been smooth at Trump National, much to the pleasure of owner Donald Trump, who reopened the magnificent oceanfront property in January of 2006.

What has been the most significant change to the course since it reopened?
It’s like a brand-new course. While it’s an original Pete Dye design, I redesigned it significantly, as each and every hole has been extended, widened and, in almost all ways, changed. Additionally, we have added millions of dollars of water features and waterfalls that create both beauty and excitement. The big thing that never changes is the fact that every hole has a view of the ocean — a direct view.

You’ve been quoted as saying Trump National Los Angeles is the best course in California. Why do you feel it deserves that distinction?

No other course in California has the water frontage or the views that Trump National has. Even Pebble Beach, as much as I love it, fronts on the bay, not on the ocean. Trump National is direct ocean and is considered by many to be the best course in California.

What would it take to have a prominent professional event at the course?
If the PGA Tour ever decided to have an event at Trump National, it would be, outside of the majors, their most successful event of the year. They would play no other course like it. It would be one of the most difficult courses and definitely the most scenic, but I really don’t know if I will be able to close it down for two to three weeks in order to hold an event.

What can patrons expect in the immediate future?
Only more of the same: the best course with the best views in the state of California.
